I love to go to markets (often called wet markets) in Southeast Asia. I love seeing the people buying and selling as much as I love seeing all the food. I love wet markets even when they are smelly — smelling of fish or durian or who knows what … What you see above is not smelly at all; it is fresh tofu for sale. The yellow kind is more salty than the white.

But this market, Pasar Kosambi, on Jalan Ahmad Yani, did not smell bad at all. In fact, the smells were quite delicious when we entered at the section devoted to the crispy kerupuk and keripik snacks. Maybe because it was relatively early in the day — about 8:30 a.m. — when we arrived. Even the live chickens (caged in the split bamboo basket) did not smell bad.

The fish looked like they had just been caught. Look at their bright eyes! I tried to get a photo of this woman (who I do not know) with three others who were all talking to the fish seller, but this was the best one.

Herlina, my boss (head of the Journalism Department), suggested I come to the market with her today. I was so happy to be invited! She was able to tell me about all kinds of things we saw there. She had to clown around when she caught me photographing vegetables.

On our way out, Herlina stocked up on kerupuk for her family and her son’s friends at his pesantren (Islamic boarding school). The man working in the shop was eager to have me take his photo.
